The picture of the pyramids that everybody carries in their head — the great three stepping down in a diagonal line, the little queens’ pyramids in front, nothing but sand around them — is taken from a rise in the desert about a kilometre to the south-west. This is the panoramic viewpoint, sometimes called the Panorama or the “nine pyramids” view.
It is a stop on the electric bus loop and, under the new visitor system, the hub for camel and horse rides. A little further along the ridge is the 9 Pyramids Lounge, an open-air restaurant of cushions and low tables with the whole necropolis laid out below.
What to see and do at Panoramic Viewpoint
Take the classic photograph
Morning gives the cleanest light and the clearest air. Walk a couple of hundred metres away from the bus stop and the souvenir stalls and you can frame the pyramids without a single person in shot.
Ride a camel across the plateau
The usual short ride heads out into the dunes for an even wider view and loops back, or carries you down towards Menkaure. Check the official tariff board, agree the terms before mounting and pay at the end — full advice is in the travel guide.
Have breakfast or lunch with a view
The 9 Pyramids Lounge serves Egyptian breakfast and lunch on shaded terraces. It is deservedly popular; reserve ahead in high season and allow time, as service is unhurried.
How to get to Panoramic Viewpoint
- By electric bus: usually the first or second stop after the visitor centre at the Great Gate.
- By camel or horse: rides between the viewpoint and the pyramids are the traditional way to cover the distance.
- On foot: possible in cool weather — about 20 minutes from Menkaure across open desert — but hot and shadeless in summer.
Insider tips
- Come here first. Haze and dust build through the day, and by afternoon you are shooting into the sun.
- Winter mornings can be misty; the view often clears by 09:00.
- This is the main sales pitch for rides and souvenirs. Decide what you want before you step off the bus.
- Quad-bike tours advertised “at the pyramids” run in the open desert outside the site, not here.
